Chapter 6

“This chow mein is just…wow. How have I not had this before?” Ariadne pushed another forkful of the delicious noodle and beansprout mix into her mouth.

“It’s a new thing we are trying. Takeout Tuesday’s. The senior students from cooking class have chosen foods from around the world that you can order to your rooms or the dining hall of course on a Tuesday.” Mrs. Baker, the head chef stood in the corner beaming at Ariadne. Her chubby cheeks bright red as always. Her red curly hair had been tucked up inside her chef’s hat but some frizz managed to poke out.

Ariadne didn’t like to comment that it was not Tuesday, but was in fact, only Monday. She didn’t want to hurt Mrs. Baker’s feelings and she was worried that the chef may take the food back off her because it was the wrong day for it.

“It’s wonderful.” Ari replied.

“What is this..Chow Mein?” Rhodri was standing in front of Mrs. Baker’s face waving and pulling silly faces at her; they had discovered on the way down to her father’s office from the attic that nobody else could see or hear him.

“It must be only the people who were in the room when you read form the book.” Professor Morgan theorised just before Mrs. Baker turned up with their food and for a few moments, spells and deceased soul mates had been forgotten.

“Will you stop that!” her father yelled at Rhodri who was now pulling at his ears and poking his tongue out right in Mrs. Baker’s face.

Mrs. Baker jumped and yelped “Stop what?” she looked worried.

“Not you my dear, I meant…. Uh Ariadne. She was eating with her mouth open. Can’t stand it.” He tried to cover up his mistake quickly.

Ariadne tried not to look offended, she never ate with her mouth open because she hated it.

Then she realised her father needed to lie to cover up him shouting at Rhodri, “Oh, yes. I’m sorry daddy.” She filled her mouth with food and made sure to look like she was concentrating on chewing with her mouth closed.

“Uh, anyway. Thank you so much for the food Mari, uh Mrs. Baker. I will send Ariadne and Lucille down with the plates later, but we must get on with our work now.” Her father smiled at the older woman.

“Of course. Thank you, girls. See you tomorrow.” Mrs Baker nodded enthusiastically and curtseyed, she actually curtseyed to Ariadne’s father and fumbled her way through the door.

“Well, you spoilt my fun.” Rhodri said.

“Sit down and behave. We need your help.”

At the thought of being important and actually being able to help, Rhodri stopped his fake pouting and sat next to Ariadne.

Lucille sat to her right, she had been uncharacteristically quiet since they had come down from the attic.

“Seal, are you okay?” Ariadne used the batter from her fried chicken ball to mop up the sauce from the chow mein.

“What?” Ariadne saw that she had barely touched her food.

“I said are you okay? You’ve been quiet, plus, Chinese takeout is your favourite food and you’ve not had more than a forkful.
